practice expectations
You will only ever get as much as you put in.
Students are expected to practice at least once every day. Learning to play the piano is learning a new language. The best way to become fluent in a language is to learn to THINK in that language, therefore encouraging the automatic mental discipline to train you to perform fluently in that language. It is exactly the same with piano. You will only ever get as much as you put in.
Ideally, a student should practice for as long or longer as his lesson time. Therefore, if a student has a 45 minute lesson, she should practice every day for 45 minutes. I understand this is not always possible and students will not be penalized for not practicing. However, please remember, as I said earlier: you will only ever get as much as you put in. **Please keep track of your daily practice times in your notebook.**
If you have difficulty with practice techniques or consistent practicing habits, please talk to me. I have a lot of tips and words of encouragement to help you help the student become fluent in music. Just like any discipline, the student needs encouragement. Be his cheerleader! Sit and listen to her practice. Ask him to teach you what he has learned!
If I consistently notice that practice is being neglected, I will initiate a discussion with the parent/caregiver or adult student and voice my concerns. I would be doing you a great disservice if I do not hold you accountable for the effort it takes to be able to learn this awesome skill. Again, you will only ever get as much as you put in.
